Are Zebra Blinds and Zebra Shades The Same?

“Zebra blinds” is a misnomer for “zebra shades,” which use alternating layers of opaque or room-darkening fabric and sheer fabrics. Zebra shades are also called banded shades. At Mr. K’s Fabric Shop near Quincy, IL, we carry high-quality Hunter Douglas window treatments that enhance the aesthetic and sophistication of your home. We’ll happily help you customize your zebra shades to complement your home.

What are Zebra Shades?

Hunter Douglas Banded Shades are made from a single layer of overlapping fabric. Typically, the fabric panels alternate between strips of sheer fabric and opaque or room-darkening fabric. This gives you excellent light control in a modern shade. When you align like strips, you block out the sun’s rays while improving your view of the outdoors and letting in natural light. When the strips are misaligned, the opaque strips lie over the sheer fabric strips to some degree so you can diffuse and even block light. This could be why zebra shades are mistaken as zebra blinds.

The modern style is versatile and allows for excellent light control and privacy. The fabrics are available in over 90 color and fabric combinations, so you can select the colors you like most and complement your home. Hunter Douglas Banded Shades also have another unique aspect. You can choose patterns, like waves or chevrons, or design elements, like circles, squares, or ducks, instead of bands for the sheer fabric. This creates a fun and unique shade that’s highly personal.

Best Rooms for Banded Shades

Zebra shades are an excellent choice for a room where you want a lot of light control and personality.

  • In the living room, the stripes create an eye-catching modern look. You can select neutral or colorful fabrics, depending upon your interior décor
  • In children’s bedrooms, consider fun patterns or designs in bold colors that you help them choose
  • In an office, consider color or a neutral shade with a subtle pattern or solid stripes that allow for both natural light and privacy
  • In a dining room, create a modern look that pairs with curtains for additional privacy and elegance
  • In guest or primary bedrooms, they contribute to the aesthetic while providing privacy.

Getting the Most out of Your Zebra Shades with Motorization

While Banded Shades have several operational methods, motorizing your shades with Hunter Douglas PowerView® Automation allows you to adjust them with a remote or phone. You can set a schedule for your shades to adjust automatically. Automation makes it easy to control light and privacy throughout the day, but you can easily override the schedule at any time.
