How to Clean Wooden Blinds at Home

For any Hunter Douglas Venetian blind, be it made of wood, faux wood, or metal, homeowners need to complete weekly cleaning tasks and annual maintenance.

Weekly Routine Care

Light dusting is needed for weekly care and maintenance of wood blinds. The frequency of dusting might increase if there are pets or children in the household or if you're prone to leaving windows open or doing any construction work in the home.

To dust your wood blinds, use a handheld duster, specialty blind duster tool, microfiber cloth, or the brush attachment on your vacuum. Start at the top of the treatment, including any window toppers like valances or cornices, then work your way down the blinds vertically, going over the slats with the blinds in a closed position. Then, tilt the vanes open to run your duster horizontally across each vane individually, working from the top down.

Monthly Cleaning

Once a month, you'll want to complete a wet wipe on your wooden blinds to keep up that like-new appearance. Fill a small bowl with warm water and a mild cleanser. Then, soak a soft rag in your cleaning mixture, wring it out, and use the damp cloth to wipe down all elements of your wood blinds – never spray cleaners directly on your blinds; always put cleaners on a cloth or brush for application. Wipe both sides of every vane and the cords or wands if your blinds have them.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas between the operating system cords; never use anything overly abrasive on wood blinds. Remember that too vigorous scrubbing could be detrimental to the finish on your wood blinds, so be consistent but gentle as you clean.

The final step in your monthly blind wipe-down is to take a dry cloth to ensure no residual moisture is left on the vanes. At this point, you can also use wood polish on the blinds, applying the polish to a clean, dry rag and then wiping it onto the blinds vane by vane.

Yearly Maintenance

When creating your care plan covering the best way to clean wood blinds, you'll want to include an annual deep clean as part of your spring-cleaning regime. Deep cleaning is the only care chore for blinds that requires homeowners to take the treatment down. Put your blinds in your tub and spray with warm water.

After thoroughly cleaning the wood blinds, dry them immediately. They must be dried promptly and completely dry before reinstalling.
