Are Blinds Easy to Clean?

In all the years we've been serving the Quincy community, it's beyond rare to have someone come in and ask for window shades that are hard to clean because they enjoy the challenge. Quite the opposite is true, as most Illinois homeowners are more interested in easy-to-clean window treatments that can make their lives easier. After working with the Hunter Douglas portfolio for years, we can confidently tell you that some of the easiest-to-clean window treatments are blinds, verticals, and Venetian. Want to learn more about easy-to-clean blinds? Read on to explore the benefits of this low-maintenance treatment and get our experts' tips for best care practices.

Venetian and Horizontal Blinds

Venetian blinds are extremely easy to clean compared to other window treatments, especially fabric-based shades. Their hard materials, like wood, vinyl, or metal, are impervious to many substances that could stain a fabric. Plus, their routine care needs, including light dusting, can be completed while keeping the window treatment in place, a time-saving feature for homeowners.

Vertical blinds, on the other hand, were designed to be easy to clean. In the 1950s, the Bopp brothers noted that though highly functional, the design of Venetian blinds with horizontal vanes had the potential to collect dust daily. By rotating the vanes to hang vertically, their new blind design needed far less cleaning as there was nothing for dirt to land on in their innovative vertical design.

3 Tips for Cleaning Blinds

Though blinds are easy to clean, there is no such thing as "never have to clean" when it comes to window treatments. So, follow these three tips to keep your Hunter Douglas blinds looking new.

  1. Regular Dusting is Worthwhile: Add a light weekly dusting to your home care routine for Venetian blinds to keep grime from building up on the treatment's slats.
  2. Spot Clean as Needed: For any liquid spills, be sure to soak up all liquid as soon as possible to prevent moisture damage to the vanes. You also want to address any stains as quickly as possible before the accumulation of debris can soak in, discolor, or harden on the vanes.
  3. Do a Deep Spring Clean Annually: We take down our blinds to wash thoroughly in the bathtub once a year, including spraying (not soaking) the entire treatment with warm water and attacking any stains with a mild cleanser and sponge. This allows us to meticulously clean not only the vanes but also the lines that can become discolored and dirty from the grease of our hands. It's important to dry your blinds thoroughly after a deep clean.
